Bare Creek Trail Run 13th November 2011

Just three of our runners enjoyed the hilly and hot conditions of the Bare Creek Trail Run, Marc Fitton, Fiona le Surf and Rebecca Fox. All three ran well to record the following results.

Marc Fitton, 1:00:29, 27th male 45+
Fiona le Surf, 1:12:12, 37th female 35-44
Rebecca Fox, 1:10:58, 34th female 35-44

New York Marathon 6th November 2011

No two people were ever happier than Tara Gallo and Ewina Ekins were, when Qantas re-took to the skies the day before they were due to fly out to New York for their assault on the New York Marathon. Well, maybe they were happier after they crossed the finish line, but you get my drift.

Tara has had a fair amount of bad luck getting to the start line of a marathon. Her first planned marathon was the Canberra Marathon in  2010, but her plans had to be put on hold when the race was cancelled due to the dispute about race ownership. This was just after her last planned long run prior to race day! She backed up again this year for Canberra, which did go ahead, but sadly without Tara as she'd contracted a virus several weeks prior to the race, and just wasn't up to running on the day. So, she decided on the M7 marathon, but put that off as she was lucky enought to secure a spot in the New York race, and ideal race for her as, originally comingn from the US,  she was able to have family and friends supporting her on the day. She finished the race in 4:11, happy to have finally realised her goal. Next stop 4 hours.

Edwina Ekins completed the race an agonising 8 seconds over the 4 hour mark, her official time 4:00:08!! Edwina was pleased with her run, but did find weaving through the forty seven odd thousand people a bit trying at times.

Congratulations to both of you.

Run4Fun Homebush, 6th November 2011

Hot weather and a not so flat course (despite the commentator's declarations of it being the flattest course around), saw some mixed results for this one. Of not was Richard's 35th placing overall and 4th in his category, and Steph Compton finishing in just under an hour, on very little training.

Jane Raftesath, 50:42, 71st female 30-39
Kerry Furrer, 55:11, 86th female 40-49
Bernice Woodbury, 1:06:59, 298th female 40-49
Steph Compton, 59:49, 177th female 40-49
Richard Sarkies, 35:54, 4th male 40-49, 35th overall

Sydney Running Festival 18th September 2011

What a change in weather from the last major run. From pouring rain to sweltering heat in just over a month. There was some disappointment with times, however the times need to be put into perspective. That kind of heat, coming out of the blue with no time to acclimatise, can easily add 10-20 minutes onto the longer distances.

All things considered our fun run results at the running festival were great.

4km -this is an approximate distance. Looking at people's times we judge the run to be somewhere between 4.4 and 4.6km.

Mandy McCartney, 19:49. 71st place overall, and 12th female
Wilson Sarkies. 28:51
Bryson Keast, 41:56
Kriss Moss, 33:41 - first fun run
Linda Hughes, 28:29

9km (approx)
Renee Badenhop 1:02:36
Bernice Woodbury, 1:03:00
Margot Wilson, 1:11:46 - first fun run
Niki van Herten, 1:12:19
Mika MacIntosh, 42:03. 31st female 30-39
Petra Thallmayer, 55:27
Kathrina Lambino, 56:56
Kirsty Reid, 1:01:18

Half Marathon
Jane Raftesath sensibly withdrew at 11kms -it simply wasn't going to be her day.
Tara Gallo, 1:47:37. 67th female 30-34
Jo Keast, 1:58:33. 32nd female 50-54
Kerry Furrer, 2:01:24
Kelly Clarke, 2:06:00
Georgina Piggot, 2:15:30
Yuki Fukawa, 2:19:05 - first half marathon (and PB)
Melinda Sheppard 2:26:33- PB
Karen Cook, 1:57:55, 68th female 45-49

Marathon
Michele Woods 4:38:25- first marathon (and PB)

City To Surf 14th August 2011

Congratulations to the Hooked on Health women's team which placed 10th in the women's team category. Official placings are always taken on the gun time, so on net times, the girls would actually have moved up a few placings. Another great effort.

If you thought standing around in the rain then running 14km was hard, spare a thought for Jo Keast who manned one of the drink stations with her son's scout group. She arrived at 6am, then stood in the rain, arm outstretched, weight forward on one leg for hours on end. Heartbreak hill may well have been easier!

Our entrants for this year's run were:

Spencer Keast, 69:31
Jane Raftesath, 70:00 (PB)
Tara Gallo, 70:31
Marc Fitton, 74:.37
Kerry Furrer, 83:28
Melinda Sheppard, 93:19
Fiona Reeves, 97:09
Petra Thallmayer, 98:08
Karen Cook, 1:07:39

Bay Run 7th August 2011

Illness and unexpected family committments saw us fielding a slightly depleted team in the Bay Run this year, however some great results none the less. Shorter toilet queues this year were a bonus, but the km markers being so out was a little frustrating. On the whole however, a very well run event.

First time fun runner Loreto Rodriguez made my nagging all worthwhile when she finished the whole 7km without stopping. Loreto has struggled with her pacing a little bit, finding it hard to complete training sessions due to over enthusiasm at the start, so it was great to see her complete the course in a time of 55:41.

Not quite the fastest dog in the west was Zippy, keeping Fiona Le Surf company in her first fun run. fiona (and Zippy, finished in a time of 41:23, a great effort.

Viv Edwards improved her time on last year's run by nearly three and a half minutes, and Linda Hughes improved by a whopping 7 minutes and 12 seconds, ifnishing in 44:14 and 44:20 respectively. Some consistent training saw Jo Keast improving on last year's time by a little over 2 minutes to finish 9th in her category in a time of 35:38. In his first offical outing in Hooked on Health colours, Michael Edwards ran solidly to finish in 37:44.

A great run from Leanne Forster saw her running sub 5min kms for the first time in a race. She finished 17th in her category in a time of 33:40. Bernice Woodbury and Petra Thallmayer ran the course together, with Petra surging to the finish line to beat Bernice home by only 11 seconds. Bernice finished in 43:01, and Petra in 42:50.

Richard Sarkies placed 6th in his category to finish 31st overall in a time of 24:23, whilst our youngest runners, Bryson Keast, Saxon Sarkies and Wilson Sarkies all finished the 2km event (which I'm sure was more like 2.5km), some with more enthusiasm than others. Bryson ran 14:56, Wilson 12:57, and Saxon 23:39.

Minimos Marathon 19th July 2011

We are really seeing the results of some consistent and targetted training paying off now with some awesome running yesterday in the Minimos. all our 10km runners completed the hilly course in under an hour, with quite a few PBs and category top 10 finishes. The 5km saw 3 of our 4 competitors finishing in the top 10 in their category, as well as a good performance from Melinda Sheppard, who's taken up running to work a few days a week - that's time efficiency for you!

10km results, in no particular order:

Jane Raftesath: 47:39 PB!!
Richard Sarkies: 37:09, 3rd in category, 18th overall
Marc Fitton: 52:38
Jo Rye: 49:13- pushing hard to break the 50 minute mark
Mika MacIntosh: 48:32
Vicky Sparey: 52:04 PB?
Georgina Piggott: 59:35 - awesome!
Leanne Forster 53:33 - getting back into form Leanne!
Jo Keast: 55:14 8th in category

5km results:

Melinda Sheppard: 32:46
Fiona Balint: 27:34 6th in category - a great run
Spencer Keast 25:28, 7th in category
Kirsten Todd: 27:06, 5th in category

2km results still to come

SMH Half Marathon Domain, 15th May 2011

We had a mixture of seasoned runners and first timers complete this event, all reaching their goal of being able to walk and talk at the end of it! Our women's team placed 5th in the teams event, after taking out the women's team event last year.

First timers Renee Badenhop and Sharon Smith finished in 2:27:58 and 2:11:47 respectively. Renee's splits showed she went out a little too fast (possibly a tactical error on the part of her coach starting her off with our faster runners towards the front), but first time half marathons are all about learning how to do the next one better! Both Sharon and Renee were a little worried about making the cut off times in spite of my assurances they had nothing to worry about, so that will be one less thing to be concerned about next time.

Marc Fitton started with the back markers and cruised home in a time of 2:03:55, a very sensible way to run a half marathon with a calf niggle (if there is a sensible way to run a half marathon with a calf niggle Marc).

Michele Woods completed the course in a time of 1:55:53. A little slower than last year, but on less training. After setting a blistering pace at the start last year she reached the "it's still a very long way to go" stage at the 8km. This year it wasn't till about 14km that Michele started wondering why she was doing this, so that's definitely an improvement. Perhaps we still have a little work to do on pacing. Stef O'Brien paced herself well throughout the run, crossing the line in 1:54:43. Stef wasn't able to start last year due to illness, so it was great to see her do so well this year.

Simon Chan and Jane Raftesath backed up for the half marathon after completing the marathon in Canberra only 5 weeks ago..... you don't have to be mad, but it helps. Simon ran 1:51:57, whilst Jane managed a 17 second PB, crossing the line in 1:45:23.

Tara Gallo ran the half in preparation for her marathon at the end of July. Tara finished in 1:53:39, feeling pretty good in the legs.

Mothers Day Classic, Domain 8th May 2011

We fielded a smaller than usual team this year, due to the many fun runs in the month of may, but pretty much all of the team were very happy with their results. From a coach's perspective it was great that everyone went away from the run at least satisfied with their result, with most people really pleased with they way they went. A few performances did bring a tear to my eye, none more so than Linda Clearie's effort in the 8km. Linda ran steadily to complete the course in 54:54, she ran all the way and had a fantastic smile on her face every time I saw her run past.

Jo Keast again ran well to take out 9th place in the F50-59 category recording a time of 42:39, about 1 minute faster than last year.

Other 8km-ers were Bernice Woodbury who just made it under 50 mins in a time of 49:56. A very pleasing result given the Lindfield Fun Run was a little disappointing for Bernice. Bec Dunn completed the 8km in 50:38 and is now keen for some good training for the run leg of her triathlon. Melinda Sheppard ran well with her husband by her side, finishing in 54:07. Amazing what you can do with a little hurry along from someone! Renee Badenhop ran a solid 53:38 in preparation for the half marathon in a week's time. Leanne Forster also ran the 8km, but unfortunately no time was recorded for her.

Linda Chiarella, Merrin Dhondt and Michelle Joosse all ran well to complete the 4km, Merrin and Michelle after quite a lay-off from fun running. Viv Edwards ran with son Michael in the 4km after having to drop down from the 8km due to injury. Good to see Viv complete the 4km with not a shin splint to be felt. And lastly, Sandy Foda finally made a return to fun running, completing the 4km in just under 6mins per km.  Welcome back Sandy

Canberra Running Festival 9th and 10th April 2011

With Sam Evans and Tara Gallo having to withdraw from the maratahon due to a hamstring injury (Sam) and a mystery virus (Tara) the Hooked on Health team was unfortunately a little depleted. Sam and her family came to Canberra with us, and I think if anything, Sam is even more determined to be in amongst it next time round. It was fantastic to have Sam's support throughout the weekend and her smiling face encouraging us on race day.

The weekend started well with Hooked on Health represented by Saxon and Wilson Sarkies in the 5km event. Wilson managed a PB of 31:17, and true to form, Saxon is still running. Great to meet up with Melissa Cheung and husband Andy prior to the 5km and have them cheering for the boys, and later Richard. Richard and Melissa have teamed up over a number of runs for the last 10 years since we all lived in Hong Kong, coaching taking place via email and hone as Melissa now lives in Melbourne.

Richard Sarkies looked good at the start of the 4 loop 10km course. On his first time past us, he was "only" a couple of hundred metres behind the eventual winner. We all knew there was little chance of him catching first place, however he looked great for a second placing as each of the first 3 times he came past us, 3rd place was a long long way behind. Of course it aint over till it's over and Richard lost his second placing with about 150m to go. He had nothing left, and had to be content with 3rd place, and first in his category. A slower than expected time of just under 37mins sees Richard hitting the road in Smithfield this weekend to try for a faster 10km.

The weather took a turn for the worse for the longer distance events on Sunday. Cold, windy and wet weather greeted us at the start line. Still, it was better than some of the hot weather we've all trained through over summer.  Jane Raftesath and I line up together at the start  The gun went and I said goodbye to her, thinking I'd be running at a faster pace than her as I was running only half the distance. When I saw her overtake me at about 500m I was pretty nervous that she may have gone out too fast, but she stayed strong over the whole distance and finished in 3:48:05. She'll just have to take care of that 5 seconds next time!

Fiona Reeves had a great run in the half marathon, finishing in PB of 2:11:47. All the photos of Fiona throughout the run show her smiling and having a great time, which is really why we do it, isn't it? Leanne Forster finished the half well, coming home stronger in the last 10kms than the first. She and I had discussed running this one as a training run for the SMH half, and based on her time of 2:13:20, she should do well in that. I managed to sustain a hip injury around about 5kms into the race -a brand new one, not something I'd had in training- and finished the run in just under 1:56. It was a tough day at the office, but sometimes you just have to put head down and bum up.

Simon Chan ran the marathon in just over 4 hours, and had initially thought he would attempt the extra 8kms and complete the UltraMarathon. Not exactly sure when he saw the light, but when asked by Richard asked as he was coming up the finishing straight if he was going on, he gave an emphatic "No Way". Simon ran the Hong Kong marathon earlier this year, so completing this on was a great effort.

Melissa Cheung had planned to run the 50km, but unfortunately just missed the cut off time, quite possibly due to her being redirected onto a slightly different course at 28kms, as the roads were being re-opened. This saw Melissa probably running more than 43 kms to get to the marathon finish line. She crossed the finish line in 5:05, but the cut off time to be able to go on to complete the UltraMaratahon was 5hrs. Disappointing and frustrating!

So, a mixed bag for the Canberra Running Festival. Some highlights and some not so hightlights. A great weekend finished off with dinner on Sunday night.

Lindfield Rotary Fun Run 3rd Arpil 2011

Our small band of merry runners were met by great weather for the start of the run. Melanie Abbott, Kirsty Reid and Megan Entwhistle were all up for their first fun run. It was great to see their enthusiasm - and they even knew what they were getting themselves in for as they'd run over the course a couple of times before!

Kirsty set out with the goal of running the whole way, and finished up with 11th place in her category in a time of 33:06. Melanie placed 7th in her category in a time of 27:44 and seasoned runners Jo Rye (25:30) and Spencer Keast (51:04 - 10km), both finished 8th in their respective categories. Megan Entwhistle (32:30) and Bernice Woodbury (33:40), both went well, running the whole way up those 2 nasty hills. Bernice was a little disappointed to find she'd been fooled by her phone app into thinking she was running faster than she was. She's slowed down thinking she wouln't be able to keep up the pace, but her GPS was measuring long. These devices are great when they work well, however instances such as these go to show the  importance of running on how you feel, as well as what the gadgets tell  you.

Sun Run: Dee Why to Manly 5th Feb 2011

In years to come, you will be able to say to someone "remember that very hot Saturday at the beginning of February a few years ago-it was at the end of a week of heat wave?" and they will know exactly which day you are talking about. That was they day of the Sun Run.So........not so great conditions for running, but a small group of us completed it, some first timers and some more seasoned runners. Everyone enjoyed finishing, and we had a couple of top 100 category finishes. The team was Mischa Moraza 34:09; Jane Raftesath 32:40 59th in category; Linda Hughes 48:21; Melinda Sheppard 46:02; Gabbi Lee 44:20; Ann Tse 41:42; Lucinda Hathorn 38:32; and Kirsten Todd 35:07 49th in category.

Whilst we were running on the cool coast, Deb Boyd and Tara Gallo made the trip to Homebush for a 10km run, Tara posting a PB of 53:18. Deb sensibly ran to the conditions to finish in 44:28.

Hooked on Health Women Do It Again: 8th Place, City To Surf August 8th 2010

Of the 133 teams entered in the open women's teams event in this year's City to Surf, the Hooked on Health team of Sam Evans, Jane Raftesath and Deb Boyd placed eighth. Jane ran a Personal Best of 71:05, bettering last year's time by over 4 minutes. Sam's running also continues to improve. Whilst her time of 71:05 was not a PB, it was the fastest time she has done for the race since starting back into serious training after having children, and indicates she's well on the way to lowering some of her personal best times. Deb Boyd's time of 65:23 was also a PB. She has only been in the race once before - when she was about 12, so we can safely assume she lowered her mark by a pretty big margin!

We had many great runs this year. Lots of people surprised themselves with just how well they went. It just goes to show what the right sort of training can do for you. Our other runners were:

Melissa Hopkins: Mel's last big fun run before she returns to Perth at the end of the year. She finished in a comfortable  1:24:34, content to take in the sights and soak up the atmosphere.
Robyn Langsford: A City to Surf first timer, Robyn just scraped under the 90 minute mark with a time of 1:39:56!
Nalina Kara: 96:38 Another first timer enjoying the sights and sounds that make up the City to Surf. Nalini's running is definitely "moving forward". She ran the 14 kms at just about the same pace she ran the Minimos 10km earlier in the year-a great effort when you consider the crowds and the extra distance, not to mention heart break hill.
Linda Lamb:2:00:24 Oh so close to being under the 2 hour mark! A great effort to go the distance, considering this was Linda's first fun run ever!
Linda Hughes: Running with her son and her Dad, Linda completed her second ever fun run in a time of 1:53:23, running about 11 of the 14km. This was a great effort when you consider the week before this run she was unsure about the 7km of the Bay Run!

Our male contingent consisted of Marc Fitton and Spencer Keast, both of whom took the run easy, finishing in 73:48 and 75:36 respectively.

The Bay Run 1st August 2010

A small contingent of Hooked on Health runners enjoyed the beautiful morning running around Iron Cove. A really good effort from everyone, particularly those first timers. Special mention goes to Vivienne Edwards, who took 6 minutes off her previous 7km PB, finishing in 47:39. Congratulations to Linda Hughes who has never run anywhere near 7kms without stopping, but did so today. It's amazing how far you can run if you just take your time. Michelle Coates improved on last year's Bay Run time by 1 minute, finishing in 47:41, and the ever reliable Jo Keast offically placed 13th in her age category, finishing in a time of 37:45. Other Hooked on Health runners were Antonia Peek, Kylie Stapleton and Nalini Kara, all running for the first time with Hooked on Health.

Hunter Valley Running Festival July 18th 2010

Can you think of a better place to spend a "running" weekend than in the Hunter Valley? The local product definitely didn't hinder Monique Hauber-Davidson's form. She turned in a 10km PB of 59:57. This is a tough course, mostly on gravel roads and grass, over undulating to hilly terrain, with one doozy of a hill to contend with. Great effort Monique.

Gold Coast Brings Out The Best: 4th July 2010

This was a great weekend for us. Not only did we all enjoy leaving the Sydney winter for a few days, we set 5 Personal Bests, gained an offical 5th in category finish (Richard Sarkies 10km) 35th in category finish (Kirsten Todd Half Marathon) and had two other top 100 finishes (Spencer Keast 100th, and Jo Keast, 64th, both in the Half Marathon).

Leanne Forster and Fiona Reeves both tackled the Half Marathon for the first time and loved it! Leanne finished in 1:59:02, and Fiona in 2:14:15. The Keast family had a great day, with Jo Keast setting a PB of 1:56:39. Bryson Keast entered his first fun run and set a 2km PB of 13:47, and whilst Spencer Keast didn't set a PB, he did run a great time of 1:46:37, his best in about 20 years. The Sarkies family fared well over the weekend too. As well as Richard's 5th place in the 10km, Wilson set a 4km PB of 24:11, and Saxon, spurred on by the crowd, ran a manful 2km, setting a PB of 24:26. The 4th member of the family, Kirsten Todd, found the going a bit tough in the Half Marathon, but managed a PB of 1:51:26.

Whilst I wasn't that enthused about my own race, it was exciting and very rewarding to see everyone else doing so well and gaining so much enjoyment from running.

Minimos Marathon 20th June 2010

Deb Boyd came out with all guns blazing today, and set a 10km PB of 48:06. It was probably only race inexperience which prevented her from posting an even better time. Deb has posed the question since the race "Do you usually feel sick when you're in a fun run, because I felt sick after about the first 1km?" A sure sign that a bit more pacing practice will see some good improvement in Deb's 10km times. A flatter course might help too! In the 5km, Kellie Clarke lowered her PB to 29:20, bettering her previous 5km PB by a minute and a half.

We had runners in the 2km, 5km and 10km races, ranging from 3 years to 50 something! In the 2km Oliva Foda, Emma  Clarke, Geena Reeves, Wilson Sarkies and Saxon Sarkies did us proud. Wilson cover the 2kms in 10:23, whilst Oliva, Emma and Geena ran 12:58, 13:56, and 14:29 respecitvely, with is might be said, mixed levels of enthousiasm.  Saxon is still running.

Sandy Foda made her come back to running with daughter Olivia, after having spent some time on the sidelines recovering from injury, so whilst she hasn’t reached her full potential just yet, she is on the way. Welcome back Sandy.

We had quite a few top 20 and some top 10 finishes in age categories in both the 5km and the 10km, and most of our 10km runners beat Tony Abbott home, which is apparently something to boast about???

Our 5km runners were:

Margie Jolliffe: 28:49, 9th in category, 38th female
Kellie Clarke: 29:20, 12th in category, 48th female
Ann Tse: 33:45, 52nd in category (Ann was again keeping her daughter company)
Hannah Wong: 33:45 38th in category (under 20's and she is only 11 years old)
George Wong-not really one of ours but we'll claim him as our own as he's Ann's husband. 33:44, 51st in category

10km runners

Richard Sarkies: 38:40. 2nd in category, 13th male, 16th overall (Still a way to go yet Rich)
Angus Boyd (again, not one of ours, but one we're claiming for the day. Husband to Debbie Boyd from the Roseville groups). 7th in category, 21st male and 24th overall
Deb Boyd: 48:06. 7th in category, finished just outside the top 50 women in 51st place, 227th overall
Spencer Keast: Just scraped in under 49 minutes in a time of 48:59! 16th in category
Sam Evans: 50:38, 24th in category. Another good hard run from Sam. Even knowing Marc Fitton was just up ahead couldn't get those legs moving up the last hill any faster!
Marc Fitton: 50:21, 19th in category. I'm told by his coach Richard he was hampered somewhat by illness, though he would never tell you that.
Fiona Reeves: 60:21. 76th in category. A good run, with focus much improved on previous fun runs. This will set Fiona up nicely for the Gold Coast Half Marathon in two weeks' time.
Paul Reeves: Another bloke we are claiming for the day. 53:03. Finished just outside the top 100 in his category in 101st position.

Spotted at the cake stall after the race
Fiona Reeves and family, Ann Tse and family

Of course, I was just policing the area, not making a purchase myself!

Another good day at the Minimos.  Races run and won (not by us unfortunately), cakes eaten, and 2nd hand toys (which don’t have all their parts) bought. It doesn’t get better than that! Oh… yes it does. I forgot to mention the sausage sizzle!

1st Place, Womens Team: SMH Half Marathon, 16th May 2010

Hooked on Health's fantastic run continued today with our women's team of Michele Woods, Sam Evans, and Jane Raftesath taking out the women's team event in the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon, by the narrowest of margins. Unfortunately, our fourth team member, Stef O'Brien had to withdraw prior to the start of the race, due to illness.

A half marathon virgin, three PB's and a "best time for ten years post babies". As a coach, you can't ask for much more than that! Marc Fitton, Michele Woods and Jane Raftesath all recorded PB's, Jane taking a massive 13 minutes off her previous best set in the same race last year, whilst Sam Evans ran her best time since giving birth to her three children, completing the run in 1hr 51 mins and 23 secs. Jane completed the 21 odd kilometres in  1hr 45 mins and 40 sec. Mark broke 1hr 50 mins for the first time (just), crossing the line at the 1 hr 49mins and 47 second mark!

In her first half marathon, Michele took the pace out perhaps a little too hard and says she was feeling the fast pace by 8km. Oh dear, only 13kms to go! After 1 hr 53 mins and 29 secs, Michele was very thankful to cross the finish line. Great run Michele.

New to Hooked on Health, Monique Hauber-Davidson also ran the half, finishing comfortably in 2hr 17 mins.

From a spectator's point of view, it was a very chilly and nerve racking morning, but well worth it. Thanks to the rest of the Hooked on Health team for their good wishes and messages of congratulations.

Mothers Day Classic Fun Run, Domain 9th May 2010

Click for full race results

It was great weather for a fun run on Sunday, a warmish morning with no wind. What an introduction for our fun run virgins! Hooked on Health placed third in the Teams - Health and Fitness Category. This is based on the number of team entrants, so thanks to everyone who entered as part of our team. We had a few keen runners who entered prior to me setting up the team, so next time... who knows.

We had some great results, with everyone managing to run the whole way this time, in spite of kids darting across in front of them and some congestion in the narrow lanes. It was certainly better than last year. We had some personal bests from quite a few people. My measurement of the course on MapmyRun and Geodistance shows the course to be long, however this is by no means accurate. By my estimates, the finishing shute of about 200 meters was not included in race measurements - ie the 4km lap was from Hospital Rd to the corner of Art Gallery Rd and Central Ave, before you turned right into Central Ave, though this has not been confirmed by race organisers as yet.

Special mention must go to Kate Wilson, from Frenchs Forest who finished 13th in the female 30-39 category and was the probably the 60th female home, and 148th overall. She had a timing chip malfunction which showed her completing the course in 27 odd minutes, however she actually ran around about 19:30. She may have placed a couple of spots higher than we have estimated, but certainly no further back in the field.  Not bad in her first fun run!

Our first timers were:
Annie Davies:
a great time of 27:49, finishing 195th in her category
Jo Hawke: placed just outside the top 200 in the tough 30-39 female category in a time of 28:52
Anne Chilton: finished in 180th place, 30-39 female in a time of 27:48, surprising perhaps herself but not the coach
Sharon North: her not so secret training along the beach front at Manly has paid off with a time of 26:50, which saw her finish in 95th place in the 18-29 female category
Anna Howarth: ran through the pain of compartment syndrome (a cause of shin splints) to record a fantastic time of 24:22. She placed 50th in the 18-29 female category

Unfortunately, Ally Seymour and Nicole Billing were not able to run due to illness, but the next fun run is just around the corner girls!!

Other 4km runners
Kirstie Leahy:
completed the 4km run with her kids, not recording a time. Great to see them all amongst it
Sandra Robinson: placed 155th in the 40-49 female category, with a time of 26:28, 48 secs faster than last year
Maria Trusell: 174th 40-49F, finishing in 26:52, about 15 seconds ahead of last year's time
Gabi Gabila: 171st, 30-39F, within a couple of seconds of last year's time. A great effort considering she was not well
Linda Clearie: a personal best time of 28:21, a 46 second improvement. Finished just outside top 200
Viv Edwards: 26:24, a big 2 second PB! 60th place. Welcome back Viv.
Bec Dunn: 24:32 - ran 4km of the 8km course and killed last year's 4km time by roughly 4 minutes. Running with Kerrie and Mel for the first lap of their 8km may have given her inspiration (or exhaustion)
Hannah Wong:ran with mum Ann Tse to record a time of 27:10. She place 130th in the under 15 F category, and she's only 11!
Wilson Sarkies: 27:24 139th in the U15M. If only his mother would have let him run faster at the start! but when you're 6 years old "mother knows best"

8km runners
Fiona Reeves:
a solid run of 50:16 as part of her Gold Coast half marathon training
Jo Keast: another good run, recording a time of 43:39 which put her in 27th place in the 50-59 F category
Rochelle Olling: 56:35, a fantastic improvement on her time of two years ago which was over 60 minutes.
Leanne Forster: 79th 40-49 F in a time of 43:33. I think she's getting the hang of this fun run business.
Rachel Mitchell: Our lone fitSquad member finished in 45 mins 46 secs. Coming soon to a running group near you??
Kerrie Glass and Melissa Hopkins: Both on the comeback trail and chose not to wear a timing chip. Just glad to be back running

Lindfield Rotary Fun Run 28th March 2010

Our first run of the season was hot and hilly, and surprisingly long! For some reason, the 10km race was misdirected on the first lap, and the 10km runners ran an extra 400 odd meters. Some of the 5km runners also ran the extra distance, but some didn't as far as I can tell. If you were a 5km runner and did not run next to the railway line and up to Lindfield shops, then you did notdo the extra loop and ran a true 5kms. The mix up was a shame since the organisers had arranged for the course to be set by a certified measurer, and very dissappointing for those who were keen to post an accurate time. No word on the errror on the fun run website, but we have spoken to race organiser Garry McIntosh who confirms the loop added an extra 400m.

We had a much smaller contingent than last year with quite a few people pulling out at the last minute due to illness, little niggles which could do without all those hills, or babysitting issues.  We still had some notable runs in both the 5km and 10km events.

First Hooked on Healther home in the 5km event was Leanne Forster, in her first run in Hooked on Health colours, and in the 10km event was Michele Woods, also in her first run for Hooked on Health. We finally got her to the start line! An even more amazing effort from Michele when you consider she's been on night duty for a week! Richard Sarkies took out his age division and finished 12th overall (not bad for an old man) and Jo Keast finished just out of the places in her age category.

10km
Jo Keast 4th, 50-59 female. 1:03:55
Michele Woods, 20th 30-39 female. 55:25
Jane Raftesath, 23rd 30-39 female. 55:46
Chris Grover, 40th 30-39 female. 1:00:46
Marc Fitton, 46th 40-49 male. 57:31
Richard Sarkies, 1st 40-49 male, 12th overall. 43:03

5km
Leanne Forster, 13th 40-49 female. 28:43
Fiona Reeves, 18th 40-49 female. 29:17
Kellie Clarke, 28th 40-49 female. 30:50
Jo Hodgkinson, 27th 30-39 female. 32:34
Ann Tse, 38th 40-49 female. 32:46
Rochelle Olling, 40th 30-39 female. 35:59

Wilson Sarkies 53rd under 12 boys - but he is only 6 years old!  36:45

Fabulous effort from both Jo and Ann, who ran the whole 5kms for the first time, and beat last years times by 3 mins 30 secs, and 3 mins 15 secs respectively!

Sri Chinmoy 22nd Nov 2009

A very hot day saw four dedicated Hooked on Health runners and one partner (who it must be said is probably more dedicated to Leanne than he is to running) brave the conditions for the trot around Centennial Park. It was really a case of get through the run as best you can, with the temperature hovering just under thirty degrees at the 8am start time. I would love to be able to say we all posted PB's and a good time was had by all, but probably the best I can say about this one is that we all survived and so did Bec's underwear! (see the Run4Fun summary) Oh...and the pancakes were great.

Run4Fun 8th Nov 2009

Jane Raftesath, Bec Dunn, Melissa Hopkins and Daniela Calear all ran in the inaugural Run4Fun, and for some, the event was more eventful than others! Picture this. You've decided you're really going to give this running thing a go, and you have finally managed to string together some consistent training, juggling your training time between the demands of three young girls and your professional career. You've never entered a 10km fun run before, but you're feeling confident because of the training you've been doing and you want to put yourself to the test. Sound familiar?

You stand around at the start line through 20 minutes of rain, not just drizzle, but rain. You are not deterred. The gun goes, you run the first km in good time. You are moving freely - indeed more freely than you had intended. In fact there are parts of you moving freely that really should not be seen in public to be doing so! That's right, you have an underwear malfunction. A quick trip to the loo saw Bec's bra being strung together with a hair elastic, and then she was on her way again. A few quick kms to make up time and twang, the excess stress was too much for Bec's straining garment, and she retired with what can only be described as an equipment malfunction.

Our other runners did complete the full fun run course. Jane ran a PB of 52:20, a great effort as she found the course route a little boring, the water lacking and didn't see any markers after 7km. Melissa completed the course in 55:28, and Daniela, in her first 10km fun run, ran just over 71 mins.

Balmain Fun Run 1st Nov 2009

Just two Hooked on Health Runners entered this event, with Jo Keast achieving a top 10 finish in her category in the 5km fun run, in a time of Jo was 6th home in the female 40-59 category (and she would have been competing against quite a few runners in that category who are younger than her). She was the 16th female home out of 84 starters. Not bad for someone who has only returned to running fairly recently!

Jo Little(Mosman) ran  the 10km in a time of 56:21, which placed her 29th female home, and 14th in her age category. This was Jo's first (of many) 10km fun runs.

Sydney Running Festival, 20th Sept 2009

It was another nice warm day for the Sydney Running Festival, even warmer than last year.  We had 34 Hooked on Health runners and walkers this year, including a few partners and children. A great day was had by everyone, in spite of toilets and water being in scarce supply, and a few glitches with baggage. Maybe next year these will be ironed out. Our hall of fame includes both Hooked on Health runners and others.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Congratulations to those women who made good use of the bushes and large tree roots as makeshift screening around an impromptu bush toilet. You freed the toilet lines up for those who were a little more modest. And nary a red singlet amongst you!

Age is no barrier

Our youngest runners, Zoe Fraser (7) and Wilson Sarkies (5), proved age was no barrier when they completed the 4km fun run in just under 36 minutes. Zoe's mother Eva must have really cracked the whip to keep them running most of the way. A fantastic way to give you a few hours peace and quiet in the afternoon. Wilson slept from 3:30 that afternoon, right through till the next morning! At the other end of the scale, we had a number of runners in the over 50's category, including Peta Addison and Jo Keast.

Motherly Love

Spotted by a Hooked on Health runner about 200m from the finish of the 9km event, a mother running with her daughter, about eight years old, who had found it all a bit too much and was vomiting. Mum's words of comfort and encouragement were "keep running darling". Tomorrow's champion, or future couch potato?

Personal Bests

Mandy Potten posted a time of 51:24 in the 9km fun run, an improvement of over 10 minutes on last year.
Maria Trussell bettered her previous 4km fun run PB by one second, finishing in 27:33.
Sandra Robinson completed the 4km course in 26:23. about fifty secs better than her previous 4km fun run PB.
Melissa Hopkins bettered last year's 9km time by just under three and a half minutes, finishing in 49:52.
For many of our runners, this was their longest fun run to date. Well done to Bec Dunn, Carolyn Menzies, Daniela Calear, Jo Little, Karen Duffy, Kelly Jahnke, Maria Malpass, Michelle Coates, Michelle Hrnjak, Peta Addison, Penny Morris.
